Choosing & Renewing a Plan

How to review your health plan before renewal

By Best Health Insurance Care · Updated March 23, 2026 · 1 min read · Draft — not yet published ·

Every year your health plan comes up for renewal. It's tempting to let it roll over — but plans change every year, sometimes in ways that cost you. A short review before the deadline can confirm you're still in the right plan, or catch a problem while there's still time to fix it.

This guide gives you a step-by-step process. If you'd rather have a licensed agent do it with you, you can request a free plan review.

Gather your renewal documents

Before you can compare anything, you need to know exactly what next year's plan looks like. Insurers and the Marketplace send renewal information ahead of open enrollment.

Your renewal notice

The renewal notice tells you which plan you'll be enrolled in next year and what it will cost. Look for:

  • the plan name (it may differ from this year's if your plan was discontinued),
  • next year's monthly premium, and
  • the deadline to make changes.

Next year's Summary of Benefits and Coverage

The Summary of Benefits and Coverage (SBC) is a standard document that lists a plan's costs and coverage in the same format for every plan. Compare next year's SBC side by side with this year's.

Your Marketplace account (if you have one)

If you get financial help through the Marketplace, log in and check that your income and household information are current. Your help is recalculated each year.

Frequently asked questions

When should I review my plan?

As soon as you receive your renewal notice, and before the open enrollment deadline. That gives you time to compare and switch if needed.

Can you review my plan for me?

Yes. A licensed agent can go through your renewal notice with you and compare other options at no cost to you. Request a free plan review on our renewal page.
