Renewals

Can I switch plans mid-year?

Short answer

Usually only if you have a qualifying life event, such as moving, losing other coverage, marriage or having a baby. Otherwise, you generally change plans during open enrollment.

Open enrollment

For most individual and Marketplace plans, open enrollment is the main time each year to change plans.

Special Enrollment Periods

Certain life events can open a Special Enrollment Period that lets you change plans mid-year. Common examples include:

  • losing other health coverage,
  • moving to a new area,
  • getting married,
  • having or adopting a baby.

Each event has its own time limit to act.

Medicaid and CHIP

You can apply for Medicaid or CHIP at any time of year.

Medicare

Medicare has its own enrollment periods and rules. Ask us if you're on Medicare.
